The St. Albert Cosmopolitan Club created the ROCKN’AUGUST event In 1996 as a means of raising money for diabetes research and community awareness of this disease. In the first two years with substantial financial support from corporate sponsors this event was held in down town Edmonton. The whole of the Provincial Capital downtown was cordoned off and filled with hundreds of antique cars and hot rods. Visitors to the site viewed these classic vehicles while listening (or dancing) to 50’s and 60’s Rock a Roll music, and a festival was born. In the second year of this event a smaller festival was held in the city of St. Albert, the oldest community in Alberta on the northwest edge of the capital.
The event was so well received, with support from city hall, corporate sponsors and the community at large, that by the third year it has operated exclusively in the city of St. Albert. The Festival of Music and Cars is organized by three local Cosmopolitan clubs, the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce and the St. Albert Cruisers car club. This five day event takes thousand of volunteer hours to host and over the years other organizations have come aboard to help, these organizations include the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the St. Albert & Breakfast Lions clubs, the Knights of Columbus and several other area car clubs.
Thanks to volunteers, the City of St. Albert, a multitude of corporate sponsors, the car guys; and most of all, the people that attend and enjoy our festival each year. All of this support and assistance has allowed ROCKN’AUGUST continue to growing each year
